Would temporary work suit me?
24th Apr, 2018

Is the day-to-day nine to five grind at the same place, day in day out, getting you down? Or perhaps you’re not getting the flexibility you need for your personal life or travel ambitions?
There are so many reasons to take on temporary jobs, and it certainly shouldn’t be seen as a last resort because there are endless positives to making the switch - you just need to know what they are!
If you’ve been considering the move but have a couple of questions in the back of your mind, Jessica from the YW Pro Team is here to save the day and help you decide once and for all if ‘temping’ is for you!
Who is temporary work suited to?
Working as a temp is great for a whole variety of people, including:
- Students
- Anyone wanting part-time hours
- Those who need to get a job quickly
- People looking to travel and work between trips
- Parents of young children
- Those who are retired but still want occasional work
- Professionals who need more experience
- Self-employed or season workers who need extra shifts
How does temping work?
When you decide that you want to work temporary jobs, rather than permanent, the best thing to do is to contact a recruitment agency like Your World Professional, and register with them.
By registering, you can let us know what type of work you’re looking for and the hours you’re available, and we’ll send over suitable roles to match your requirements. So, we’ll take all the tedious, hard work out your hands and sort it all for you. You just have to say yes or no and turn up to the job!
What am I entitled to?
As a temporary member of staff, you’re still entitled to most things that a permanent staff member has. You still receive the same break times, you’re entitled to 11 hours rest per 24 hours and the right to work is a maximum of 48 hours in a week.
Additionally, once you’ve been with a company for a certain amount of time, you may have the right to the likes of maternity/paternity leave and statutory sick pay. Once you’ve been somewhere for 12 weeks, you could also be entitled to the same level of pay as a full-time member of staff.
What advice do you have for someone that wants to become a temp?
Remember to send your registration documents as soon as possible and ensure your CV’s up to date (see our advice on updating your CV). It’s also essential to make your agency aware of your availability at the soonest possible time, so you’re not forced to turn down shifts (you want to make a good impression).
If you’re temping as a means to gain more experience, make sure you give them everything you’ve got, and make an effort to become a part of the team – who knows, you might get a permanent offer at the end of it!
Your consultant is there to represent you and find your next means of income, so stay in regular contact with them. This will help them to understand the types of jobs you’re interested in and put you at the forefront of their mind when positions pop up.
It’s ok to ask questions. If there’s anything you want to know about a job you’re interested in, just speak with your consultant to avoid any surprises on your first day.
What happens if I’m not happy with my position?
Our hope is for you to be over the moon with every job you go to; however, we understand that this isn’t always the case. If you’re having a problem with the likes of colleagues, your working hours or the tasks you’re assigned, your first point of call should always be your manager. You have just as much right to speak to management as anyone else.
If you feel that you haven’t got the result you were looking for, just speak with your consultant. We wouldn’t want to work anywhere that makes us unhappy, and certainly wouldn’t want you to be either.
